Week 2 Waiver Wire: Role Over Box Score

Pending MNF. How Week 1 treated our board, who actually belongs on waivers, and FAAB as a percent of your budget.

Week 2 Waiver Wire

Role Over Box Score (Pending MNF)

By GH | thegavfather.com

Week 1 is in the books except Broncos at Chiefs on Monday Night. Do not spend real FAAB on Denver or Kansas City names until that game ends. Everything below is based on Sunday (plus Wednesday night NE/SEA and the Australia SF/LAR opener).

Half-PPR is the board that matters. Ownership floats by platform — treat the percentages below as a share of your FAAB budget, not a dollar amount. A 15% bid means 15% of whatever you have left, whether that is $100 or $1,000.

How our board held up

The process hits

One week is noise. Roles and signals are not.

Our take Player What Week 1 said
Overall #1 Jahmyr Gibbs (RB, DET) 29–156–2 rushing plus five catches with Montgomery gone. The three-down ceiling we priced is real.
QB1 Josh Allen (QB, BUF) 35.7 fantasy points and two pass / two rush scores against the defense people were scared of.
BUY Ashton Jeanty (RB, LV) 23 carries, 102 rush yards, six catches, two scores. Three-down work held.
BUY Cam Skattebo (RB, NYG) 18–81–1 as the clear lead back on SNF. Tracy fumbled his way out of the primary cuff role.
BUY Bucky Irving (RB, TB) Lead of the Irving/Gainwell rotation. Exactly the usage we paid for.
BUY Dalton Kincaid (TE, BUF) 18 fantasy points inside the Allen explosion.
BUY Deebo Samuel Sr. (WR, SF) 6–48–1 with Stribling out. Our late BUY was the right side of the market.
BUY Kyle Monangai (RB, CHI) Productive in the Swift split. Do not overreact to one long TD — the committee is the same as late 2025.
RB8 Derrick Henry (RB, BAL) 24–144–3. Doyle’s scheme gave him daylight. Keep him RB1.
WR14 Zay Flowers (WR, BAL) 5–150–1 before the hamstring. The talent signal is fine; the health signal is now the question.

Skattebo and Jeanty as BUYs ahead of market ADP looked right. Same for Kincaid and Deebo. Gibbs as 1.01 looked right. Allen as QB1 looked right.

The process misses / noise

Our take Player What Week 1 said
FADE Caleb Williams (QB, CHI) 37.3 points and a 59-burger. Short-term miss on the FADE. Recheck after Minnesota — one scripted blowout is not a season.
FADE D'Andre Swift (RB, CHI) 32.4 points. We faded the committee; he won the early share. Still a split with Monangai.
FADE Jalen Coker (WR, CAR) 8–138–2. Biggest board miss of the week if you left him undrafted.
FADE Caleb Douglas (WR, MIA) 5–94 on 86% routes and a 26% target share. Camp breakout that Week 1 confirmed — we were late.
FADE Kaelon Black (RB, SF) Out-carried CMC 14–10. We had him as a deep FADE; he is now the most important cuff on the board.
WR1 Ja'Marr Chase (WR, CIN) 2–12. Do not sell. September Chase is a known pattern.
WR8 Drake London (WR, ATL) Cooper Rush disaster. Hold for Tua.
RB6 James Cook (RB, BUF) Quiet volume day vs HOU. Keep him in the RB1 mix.
FADE Malik Nabers (WR, NYG) Returned from ACL: 6–69 on nine targets. The FADE was injury risk, not talent. He is a hold / buy-back if anyone panics.

Bottom line on rankings: elites and our high-conviction BUYs mostly did what they were supposed to do. The misses were concentrated in late WRs we faded (Coker, Caleb Douglas) and the new SF RB2 (Black). That is where the waiver board starts.

Stats check

  • Volume > efficiency theater. Gibbs, Jeanty, Henry, Skattebo, and Allen won on touches and opportunity, not one random YAC spike.
  • Snap / route share beats the box score. Wicks out-snapped Lemon. Vele played 82 of 90. Black earned 43% snaps. Gesicki scored big on 21 of 64 snaps — that is the trap.
  • Offense environment still matters. Miami can make Douglas the WR1 and still starve the position. Carolina can make Coker a must-add because Young is pushing the ball. Do not treat every Week 1 WR boom the same.

FAAB logic (read this first)

We do not know your budget. Bid percent of remaining FAAB.

Tier % of budget When to use it
Panic / season-shaping 18–28% Clear RB2 / every-week FLEX with roster scarcity, or the best available replacement for an IR star
Strong add 10–17% Real role (snaps + routes) with multi-week runway
Standard add 5–9% Useful FLEX / cuff / injury fill
Speculative 1–4% Look-ahead stashes others will ignore
$0 / leave 0% Box-score mirages and temporary target spikes

Rules we are using this week:

  1. Role permanence first. Snaps, routes, and injury-driven opportunity beat raw fantasy points.
  2. Do not pay WR1 prices for run-first offenses (Miami, Baltimore depth).
  3. Handcuffs with standalone path beat pure lottery tickets when RB depth is thin.
  4. Save powder for MNF surprises. If you bid everything tonight, you cannot react to Arrowhead.

Waiver priority (our order)

Players already rostered in most 10-team leagues (Coker ~60%+, Wan'Dale, etc.) are noted. Priority is for typical 12-team half-PPR.

1. Kaelon Black (RB, SF) — Priority 1

FAAB: 18–25% (need RB: push 25–28%)

Why he is on the wire legitimately: out-carried McCaffrey, 43% snaps, clear RB2 over Jordan James. Even if Australia / cramps inflated the split, he is the only SF handcuff that matters — and SF is favored the next two weeks (MIA, ARI), which is the exact script for a Corum-style FLEX.

Why not higher than 28%: if CMC reclaims 20+ touches next week, Black is a cuff, not a weekly starter. Do not mortgage the season.

2. Devaughn Vele (WR, NO) — Priority 2

FAAB: 12–18%

Basis: 82 of 90 snaps, on the field with Olave in 2-WR, Jordyn Tyson on IR/hamstring. The 90-play, 56-pass game will not repeat. The role can. That is enough for every-week FLEX in PPR/half-PPR until Tyson returns.

3. Romeo Doubs (WR, NE) — Priority 3 (if available)

FAAB: 10–16%

Basis: A.J. Brown is on IR (high ankle, four-game minimum). Doubs is the $68M veteran who should absorb boundary work even after a zero-catch debut. If he is already rostered (~55%), skip to DeMario Douglas.

4. Deebo Samuel Sr. (WR, SF) — Priority 3b (where still free)

FAAB: 10–15%

Basis: Stribling is out ~a month. Deebo already produced and fits Shanahan’s CMC-preservation plan as a runner/receiver. We had him as a BUY at WR33 — if he is somehow still free, that is a gift.

5. Dontayvion Wicks (WR, PHI) — Priority 4

FAAB: 6–10%

Basis: nearly mirrored DeVonta Smith in snaps/routes and beat Makai Lemon. The box score (2–73–1) looks splashy; the route share is the real reason. Soft upcoming slate (TEN, CHI).

6. Caleb Douglas (WR, MIA) — Priority 5

FAAB: 5–9% (do not go double digits)

Basis: real alpha role (86% routes, 26% targets, 5–94). Cap the bid because Miami is run-first and Week 2 is at San Francisco. You are buying the role, not a WR2 projection.

7. DeMario Douglas (WR, NE) — Priority 6 / look-ahead

FAAB: 4–8%

Basis: led NE in targets (7) even before Brown’s exit; ~1% owned in many leagues. While everyone fights over Doubs, Douglas is the PPR floor in McDaniels’ committee. Four weeks of Brown IR is a long runway.

8. Braelon Allen (RB, NYJ) — Priority 7

FAAB: 3–7%

Basis: 40% snaps and 10 carries behind Hall. Not a standalone starter. Best pure cuff on the board after Black if your RB room is thin.

9. Adonai Mitchell (WR, NYJ) — Priority 8 / look-ahead

FAAB: 3–6%

Basis: 69% snap share with Garrett Wilson; Omar Cooper Jr. hurt. Next three against soft NFC North pass defenses (GB, DET, CHI). This is the “others will not fight for him” WR.

10. Michael Mayer (TE, LV) — Priority 9 (TE-needy only)

FAAB: 2–5%

Basis: led Raiders in targets with Bowers out. Cap it hard — Bowers return rumors (even if optimistic) crush the ceiling. Streamer, not a season TE1 bid.

11. Rashod Bateman (WR, BAL) — Priority 10 / contingency stash

FAAB: 1–3%

Basis: Flowers is day-to-day (MRI); Lane fractured wrist. Bateman is the next man up in a Henry/Lamar run-first offense. Cheap insurance, not a must-start until Flowers’ status is bad.

12. Emmett Johnson (RB, KC) / Jonah Coleman (RB, DEN) — MNF holds

FAAB: wait

Do not bid until Arrowhead ends. Johnson is the reported Walker cuff; Coleman is the Payton committee dart. Revisit Tuesday morning.

Leave on waivers (this week)

Player Why others will add him Why we pass
Mike Gesicki (TE, CIN) 5–78–1, more yards than Chase+Higgins 21 of 64 snaps. Target rate is a mirage. All/Sample rotation does not support weekly TE1.
Kalif Raymond (WR, CHI) 8–84 on nine targets Odunze limited, Burden still the long-term piece. Watch list, not FAAB.
Kendre Miller (RB, NO) Tied Etienne in carries, scored Kamara looming; 26 of 90 snaps. Deep-league only.
Tyler Shough (QB, NO) 410 yards, comeback script Most of the points came on late desperation drives. Superflex streamer at best after BAL.

Look-ahead board (who others will underrate)

These are the names to think about before the public waiver column does:

  1. Adonai Mitchell — schedule + Cooper absence. Quiet path to WR3/FLEX weeks.
  2. DeMario Douglas — Brown IR committee winner for PPR managers who miss Doubs.
  3. Dontayvion Wicks — route share now; Lemon was the draft hype.
  4. Braelon Allen — Hall injury insurance is more valuable in Week 2 than another boom WR.
  5. Carnell Tate (WR, TEN) — ugly box score, strong underlying share (86% snaps / 21% targets). If someone cuts him after a quiet debut, take the free upside.
  6. Bateman only if Flowers’ MRI is bad — otherwise save the roster spot.

Quick claim order (print this)

  1. Kaelon Black
  2. Devaughn Vele
  3. Romeo Doubs (or Deebo if somehow free)
  4. Dontayvion Wicks
  5. Caleb Douglas (capped bid)
  6. DeMario Douglas
  7. Braelon Allen
  8. Adonai Mitchell
  9. Michael Mayer (TE needy)
  10. Rashod Bateman (stash)

MNF pause: Emmett Johnson, Jonah Coleman, any Chiefs/Broncos surprise.

Closing

Week 1 rewarded volume and role. Our top of the board and our high-conviction BUYs mostly held. The waiver mistakes this week will be (a) paying WR1 FAAB for Gesicki/Raymond spikes and (b) ignoring Black because “CMC always takes it back.”
