The Bust List: This Is Not Going to Work Out for You
Succession taught us that the most confident person in the room is usually the one about to get humiliated. The data agrees. Here are the players everyone loves that the model wants nothing to do with.
The Bust List: This Is Not Going to Work Out for You
By GH | thegavfather.com
Succession is a show about powerful people who are absolutely certain they are making the right moves right up until the moment everything falls apart.
Fantasy football drafts are the same.
The Gavfather System's bust prediction model is 86% accurate. It finds players who outperformed their underlying opportunity who scored more points than their target share, carry volume, and efficiency metrics should have produced.
These players got lucky. The market priced them on last year's points. The model sees through it.
Here are this year's Logan Roys of fantasy football. Powerful on paper. About to be humiliated.
The Pattern
Before the names here is what the bust model actually looks for.
Players most likely to regress share these traits:
High touchdown rate relative to opportunity. Touchdowns are not repeatable. A player who scored 12 TDs last year because his team kept feeding him near the goal line is not guaranteed to repeat that. The model discounts TD production heavily.
Garbage time inflation. The Gavfather System strips out all plays when teams are winning or losing by more than two scores. A receiver who padded his stats against prevent defenses in blowouts is not as good as his raw numbers suggest.
Outperformance vs opportunity. When a player's actual fantasy points significantly exceed what their target share and efficiency metrics project, regression is coming. The market bought the result. The model bought the process.
The Bust List
Patrick Mahomes, QB Kansas City Chiefs
The market has Mahomes as a top-3 QB. The Gavfather System has him QB9.
He tore his ACL and LCL in Week 15 of 2025. He is now fully cleared for camp with no limitations, taking first-team 11-on-11. Reid is sitting him in the preseason. Week 1 (Sept 14 vs DEN) is the target.
The remaining issue is not clearance. It is Bieniemy back as OC in a ground-and-pound scheme: more carries, fewer attempts, less opportunity — plus rust from skipping the exhibitions.
The Star Loyalist will still reach for last year's Mahomes. Price the scheme. Do not invent a medical hold that the Chiefs already lifted.
Jalen Hurts, QB Philadelphia Eagles
Sean Mannion has never called a play at the NFL level. He was a backup quarterback. He was a QB coach. Now he is running the Eagles offense.
Hurts has never played for a first-time OC. The model applies a significant uncertainty penalty.
The market has him top-5 QB. The Gavfather has him QB6 with an injury risk flag.
Logan Roy would recognize this situation. A company being handed to someone who has never run one before. It might work. It usually doesn't.
Dak Prescott, QB Dallas Cowboys
The market has Dak as QB5. The Gavfather has him QB20.
Fifteen spot positional disagreement.
Injury history. Dallas situation score of 49.7 out of 100 one of the lower scores among starting QB situations. A receiving corps that lost key pieces.
The market remembers the good Dak years. The model only knows what the numbers say now.
Calvin Ridley, WR
Our model has Ridley at WR184. The market has him at WR55.
That is a 129-spot positional disagreement.
He is 31. He has had multiple injury-interrupted seasons. His target share in 2025 did not justify his ADP. The age cliff for WRs is real.
The boom years are behind him. The market has not fully accepted this yet.
The 49ers Stack
Christian McCaffrey. George Kittle. Brock Purdy.
All three play TWO international games in 2026 Melbourne in Week 1 and Mexico City in Week 11.
London games average 40.5 points. Germany games average 32 points. Melbourne is unknown but estimated similar.
Two weeks of suppressed scoring baked in before the season starts. Nobody is discounting 49ers players for this. The model flags all three.
Kittle especially. The market has him TE10. We have him TE2. But two international games means two weeks where his production is historically lower than normal.
Draft him with eyes open.
